The Permian Basin is a top-five producer in the world in oil and natural gas, representing four percent of global oil production and 39 percent of US oil production. The region produces over a tenth of the natural gas in the U.S. The Permian Basin energy sector is vital for the Texas economy, supporting more than 200,000 jobs while generating over 10.8 percent of Texas’ Gross Domestic Product.
While the Permian Basin is an energy powerhouse, in recent years, leaders have worked hard to diversify the economy. The University of Texas - Permian Basin is home to the Center for Energy and Economic Diversification. The region now supports a growing number of aerospace, distribution, and business service companies, in addition to many family-owned businesses and farms.
